German vs Oriental Cockroaches: What Is the Difference?

Spot a cockroach scuttling across your kitchen floor when the light flicks on, and your first reaction is understandably to get rid of it immediately. Before reaching for a shop-bought spray, you need to know which species is in the building—because treating a German cockroach like an Oriental one will completely miss the nest.

The Quick Answer: How to Tell Them Apart at a Glance

In UK homes and commercial kitchens, nearly every infestation comes down to two species: the German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach. They look different, climb differently, and live in completely opposite parts of a property.

German Cockroach

Size & Colour: Small (12mm to 15mm long), light tan to medium brown with two distinct dark stripes running down behind its head.
Behaviour: Has sticky pads on its feet, meaning it can easily climb smooth vertical surfaces like glazed tiles, stainless steel prep tables, and inside high-level cupboards.
Favourite Spot: Warm, humid motor housings—behind fridge-freezers, inside commercial dishwashers, and under espresso machines.

Oriental Cockroach

Size & Colour: Much larger (20mm to 25mm long), glossy dark brown to jet black, often mistaken for a large black beetle.
Behaviour: Slower moving and struggles to climb smooth vertical surfaces. You will almost always find them at floor level or below ground.
Favourite Spot: Cool, damp, dark sub-floor voids, cellars, leaking sink waste pipes, and cracked clay drains.

Why Proper Identification Dictates the Treatment

When we turn up to inspect a property with our torches and inspection mirrors, our first job is confirming which species we are dealing with. A lot of homeowners and landlords waste money on DIY foggers or supermarket aerosols. Those sprays simply irritate cockroaches, driving them deeper into wall cavities or across party walls into neighbouring houses.

With over 155 years of combined technician experience at Pest Medic, we treat the two species using completely different toolkits. If we put bait down on a damp cellar floor for German cockroaches that are actually living inside a warm microwave motor at eye level, the bait will sit there untouched. Equally, gel-baiting kitchen hinges will not stop Oriental cockroaches marching up from a fractured drain bung underneath the floorboards.

German Cockroaches: The Warm Appliance Specialists

German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) do not survive outdoors in the British climate. They usually arrive inside a building as hitchhikers—tucked inside cardboard delivery boxes, second-hand white goods, or luggage. Once inside a heated property, they breed at an alarming rate.

Unlike other species that drop their egg cases (oothecae) in random crevices, the female German cockroach carries her egg case attached to the end of her abdomen right up until the nymphs are ready to hatch. Each case holds 30 to 40 eggs. Because she protects them until the last moment, their survival rate is massive, and a small problem behind a kickboard can turn into hundreds of insects within a couple of months.

Where We Find Them During an Inspection

  • Appliance Motors: We pull out fridges, freezers, and washing machines to inspect the warm compressor housings at the back.
  • High-Level Hinges & Seals: Because they climb polished surfaces effortlessly, we find dark, peppery droppings inside upper kitchen cabinet hinges and tucked under rubber fridge door seals.
  • Electrical Trunking: They squeeze through gaps barely 2mm wide, using warm electrical conduit and hot water pipe boxing to travel between flats or rooms.

Oriental Cockroaches: The Cellar and Drain Dwellers

Oriental cockroaches (Blatta orientalis) are far hardier in cooler temperatures. In older Lancashire properties—such as stone-built cottages in the Ribble Valley or properties in Darwen and Accrington with damp cellars and shared sub-floor voids—Oriental cockroaches thrive down in the dark, damp masonry beneath the ground floor.

The female drops her dark brown egg case in sheltered, damp crevices near a food source before it hatches, with each capsule containing around 16 eggs. They take much longer to reach adulthood than German cockroaches, meaning populations build up slowly over months or years, often going unnoticed until a heavy rainstorm floods the drains and pushes them up into the ground-floor kitchen or bathroom.

The Drainage Connection

Because Oriental cockroaches love decaying organic matter and cool, damp brick chambers, they frequently live inside old clay sewer runs and inspection chambers. If an internal soil stack collar is unsealed, or a redundant drain spur is uncapped under the kitchen plinth, they walk straight out of the drainage system into the house at night.

When we suspect Oriental cockroaches are coming up from below ground, we lift the external manhole covers to inspect the benching and pipe junctions. Where a hidden underground fault is suspected, we work directly alongside specialist drainage contractors Drain Medics and Liverpool One Drainage to carry out CCTV camera surveys, locate broken clay pipes, and seal the breach permanently.

Side-by-Side Comparison for Homeowners & Businesses

Colour & Markings Light brown/tan with two dark parallel stripes behind the head Shiny dark mahogany brown to completely black
Climbing Ability Climbs glass, tiles, and stainless steel easily Poor climber; restricted to rough masonry and floor level
Preferred Conditions Hot (25°C–30°C) and humid (kitchens, motors, boilers) Cooler (20°C–25°C) and damp (cellars, drains, sub-floors)
Egg Case (Ootheca) Carried by female until hatching; 30–40 nymphs per case Glued into damp crevices early; up to 16 nymphs per case

How We Eradicate Each Species on Site

Once we know which cockroach is on your premises, we put together a targeted treatment plan. As CPCA-accredited technicians, we avoid saturating your home or commercial kitchen with broad-spectrum chemical sprays unless necessary, focusing instead on precision biocides, growth regulators, and physical proofing.

1. Targeted Gel Baiting & Secondary Transfer

For German cockroaches, we apply tiny dots of professional insecticidal gel inside cabinet hinges, under worktop lips, and around warm motor housings using a precision applicator gun. Cockroaches feed on the gel, return to their hidden harbourage, and pass the active ingredient on to the rest of the colony—including nymphs that never leave the nest.

2. Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs)

Chemical sprays cannot penetrate hardened cockroach egg cases. We use professional Insect Growth Regulators alongside residual crack-and-crevice treatments. IGRs halt the development of immature nymphs so they can never reach breeding maturity, breaking the reproductive cycle for good.

3. Drain Proofing & Structural Sealing

For Oriental cockroaches emerging from cellars or drains, we use non-toxic tracking dust and sticky pheromone monitors under kickboards to pinpoint the exact entry gap. Once cleared, we pack pipe collars with stainless steel or copper wire mesh and seal masonry gaps around waste pipes so they cannot re-enter from neighbouring voids.
