How Do You Prepare a Room for Bed Bug Treatment?
Getting a bedroom ready for a professional bed bug visit takes about two to three hours of careful sorting, but it is the single biggest factor in making sure the treatment works first time. Here is our straightforward, step-by-step checklist on how to strip beds safely, bag laundry without dropping eggs down the stairs, and give our technicians the access needed to clear the infestation.
! The Short Answer: What You Need to Do Before We Arrive
When we turn up with our equipment, we need clear access to every skirting board, bed frame joint, and mattress seam. If a room is packed with clutter or clothes are carried loose through the house, bed bugs get shielded from treatment or dropped into clean rooms.
1. Bag In the Room
Never carry loose sheets or clothes down the hallway. Put all fabrics into heavy-duty bin bags inside the affected bedroom and tie them shut first.
2. Hot Wash at 60°C
Wash bedding, curtains, and clothing on a 60°C cycle, or run them through a hot tumble dryer for at least 30 minutes to kill eggs and nymphs.
3. Clear a 50cm Perimeter
Pull chests of drawers, wardrobes, and beds about 50cm away from the walls so we can treat every skirting board edge and carpet gripper rod.
4. Keep Furniture Put
Do not drag mattresses or bedside tables out onto the landing or into the back alley. Leave furniture inside the room so we can treat it properly.
Step 1: Containing Laundry Without Spreading Eggs Into the Hallway
The most common mistake we see in residential properties is people stripping the bed in a panic and carrying an armful of sheets down the stairs to the washing machine. Bed bugs and their tiny, sticky white eggs cling to fabric seams. Walking loose bedding through the landing and living room drops them along the way, turning a single-bedroom job into a whole-house infestation.
Take a roll of thick black bin liners or dissolvable laundry bags into the bedroom before you touch the bed. Strip the duvet cover, pillowcases, fitted sheet, and mattress protector, and place them straight into the bags while standing inside the room. Do the same with clothes stored inside bedside drawers, under-bed storage boxes, or laundry baskets.
How to process your bagged laundry safely:
- Tie the bags tightly before carrying them out of the bedroom door.
- Tip clothes directly into the washing machine drum without letting them brush against the kitchen floor or worktops, then immediately bin the empty plastic bag in your outside wheelie bin.
- Wash at 60°C minimum: Standard 30°C or 40°C eco-washes will not kill bed bug eggs. If an item is delicate and cannot be washed hot, place it dry into a tumble dryer on high heat for 30 minutes, or seal it in a bag and pop it in a chest freezer for four days.
- Store clean laundry in fresh sealed bags: Once washed and dried, keep your clean clothes sealed in fresh bin bags or airtight plastic tubs outside the affected room until our treatment is finished.
Step 2: Clearing Floors, Under-Bed Storage, and Skirting Access
Bed bugs do not just live in mattresses. Once a population builds up, they crawl behind wooden skirting boards, under carpet edges, into divan base clips, and behind headboard brackets. For our professional bed bug eradication and heat treatments to reach every hiding spot, we need physical access to the structure of the room.
Empty everything out from underneath the bed. Shoes, cardboard boxes, suitcases, and children's toys need to be inspected carefully. Hard plastic or metal items can be wiped down with hot soapy water; cardboard boxes that have been sitting under an infested bed are best sealed in a bag and disposed of outside, as bed bugs love laying eggs inside corrugated cardboard flutes.
Once the floor is clear of clutter, pull wardrobes, chests of drawers, and bedside cabinets roughly 40cm to 50cm away from the walls. Take pictures, mirrors, and wall hangings off the walls—especially anything hanging directly above the headboard—and leave them in the room so we can check and treat the backing boards.
Why You Should Never Drag a Mattress Outside
When people spot blood spots or dark cast skins along their mattress piping, their first instinct is to haul the mattress down the stairs and throw it into the back yard.
Unless a mattress is physically ripped open and falling apart, we can usually save it using targeted heat and professional treatment. Dragging an untreated mattress down narrow staircases scrapes bugs off onto the wallpaper and banisters. Leave the mattress on the bed frame so we can treat it in situ.
Step 3: Preparing for Heat Treatment vs Chemical Spraying
At Pest Medic, we often combine high-temperature thermal treatments with professional residual biocides and insect growth regulators (IGRs). Both methods require slightly different precautions right before we step through the door.
Heat Treatment Prep
Thermal equipment raises room and crevice temperatures high enough to cook bed bugs and their eggs inside timber joints and upholstery. Remove heat-sensitive items from the room first:
- Aerosol cans, deodorants, and hairsprays
- Cigarette lighters and vapes
- Wax candles, lipsticks, and cosmetics
- Chocolate, medicines, and indoor houseplants
- Unplug electronics around the bed so sockets are accessible
Residual Spray & Vacuum Prep
We use HEPA-filtered vacuums to physically extract live bugs and eggs before applying residual crack-and-crevice sprays and growth regulators:
- Do not apply DIY high-street bug bombs or foggers beforehand—they scatter bugs deeper into wall cavities
- Cover or remove fish tanks and disconnect air pumps
- Remove pet bowls, dog beds, and litter trays
- Plan for everyone (including pets) to stay out of the treated rooms for 3 to 4 hours until surfaces are bone dry
Step 4: What to Expect After We Finish the Job
Once our technicians have finished treating the bed frame, mattress seams, floorboards, and skirting edges, the residual barrier needs time to dry completely. Usually, you can come back into the room after three to four hours and open a window to air it out.
Do not vacuum or mop the edges of the room for at least 14 days. When we apply a professional residual insecticide and insect growth regulator along skirting boards and under the bed frame, it leaves an invisible microscopic film. Any stray bed bugs emerging from deep floorboard gaps over the next fortnight need to crawl across that treated zone to die. If you hoover right up to the skirting boards or wash the floor edges with bleach the next day, you wipe away the protective barrier.
In many older red-brick terraced homes across Blackburn and Accrington, floorboards share gaps with adjoining rooms. Keep sleeping in your normal bed once the treatment is dry rather than moving onto the living room sofa; sleeping on the sofa only lures any surviving bugs out of the bedroom and into the downstairs upholstery.
